Dogs Trust has been working for the past three years on exposing the illegal import of puppies.
As part of the charity's ongoing fight against Puppy Smuggling, Dogs Trust is now covering the cost and care of taking the seized puppies through quarantine. Until Dogs Trust stepped in, seized puppies were at the risk of being put to sleep or turned away at the border - enabling their trafficker to enter illegally through a different route.
This week our quarantine kennels have been filled. The charity is caring for multiple litters of under age, illegally imported French Bulldogs, Pugs, Dachshunds and English Bulldogs all destined to be sold to unsuspecting British buyers.
Dogs Trust believes the puppy smuggling trade is replacing the illegal trade of cigarettes. The penalties are low and the profits so high.

Two hundred poorly puppies smuggled into UK EVERY DAY as demand for designer dogs soars Daily Mirror investigation has exposed cruel trade of thousands of vulnerable creatures being illegally farmed and kept in horrific conditions Nearly 200 poorly puppies are being trafficked into Britain every day – as soaring demand for designer dogs fuels a brutal £100million underground industry. The cruel trade has reached “epidemic” proportions after rocketing in recent years, animal welfare experts say. A shocking 70,000 of the vulnerable creatures were illegally transported here by Irish and Eastern European gangs last year – a massive increase from 1,800 reported in official figures five years ago. The pups are often inbred and kept in horrendous conditions, making them susceptible to fatal diseases, before being sold to unwitting animal lovers.
